Belfast International Airport has unveiled an ambitious five-year investment plan, committing £100 million to propel the airport forward. Spearheaded by VINCI Airports, the plan aims to bolster operational efficiency, enhance the passenger experience, and promote environmental sustainability.
The initial phase of this expansive program is already in motion, with the construction of a state-of-the-art security facility adjacent to the current terminal building. This cutting-edge £25 million structure will revolutionise the passenger security process by introducing Standard 3 X-ray screening equipment, eliminating the need for passengers to remove liquids or electronics from their luggage. The new building is slated to be operational by the summer of 2024.
In addition to this major security upgrade, VINCI Airports’ investment strategy encompasses a complete overhaul of existing facilities. The airside departure area is set for a substantial transformation, including the addition of departure gates and increased seating capacity. Passengers will also enjoy an expanded range of shopping options, with new catering and retail outlets to choose from. Furthermore, the immigration area is scheduled for expansion over the next five years.
These strategic investments are poised to optimize operational efficiency and elevate the overall quality of services at Belfast International Airport. The airport, already experiencing a remarkable surge in traffic with over 4.5 million passengers in the first nine months of 2023 (a 22% increase from 2022), is swiftly returning to pre-pandemic levels. This initiative is not only a boon for the airport but also promises a direct positive impact on the entire region, creating approximately 400 jobs in collaboration with local construction firms during the construction phase.
In line with its commitment to environmental sustainability, VINCI Airports is set to launch a 26 MWp solar farm on the airport premises. This solar farm is projected to generate a substantial 22.4 GWh of electricity annually while curbing 12,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions. The development, financing, construction, and operation of the solar farm will be overseen by VINCI Concessions’ photovoltaic subsidiary, SunMind. This green initiative is part of VINCI Airports’ global environmental action plan, which aims to achieve a 50% reduction in emissions by 2030 and attain net-zero emissions by 2050. Since becoming a part of the VINCI Airports network in 2018, Belfast International Airport has already reduced its emissions (scope 1 and 2) by a remarkable 44% through the application of VINCI Airports’ environmental solutions.
Nicolas Notebaert, CEO of VINCI Concessions and President of VINCI Airports, affirmed the commitment to enhance the passenger experience and promote sustainable development. He highlighted the airport’s pivotal role in aviation, tourism, and the local economy. As a long-term partner, VINCI Airports is dedicated to fostering the airport’s sustainable growth and bolstering its environmental performance.
Graham Keddie, Managing Director at Belfast International Airport, expressed gratitude for VINCI Airports’ unwavering commitment to Northern Ireland and the substantial investment that underscores their belief in the airport’s potential for future growth. As the airport prepares to mark its 60th anniversary, this announcement outlines a clear vision for long-term strategic development, benefitting passengers and the broader region.
